12-hour charity kart race set for December 5 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.Trackmagic factory driver, IndyCar and Sportscar standout Memo Gidley, will lead the team at the Granja Viana 500 in December.
The race annually attracts some of racing’s biggest names from Formula One, the IndyCar Series, NASCAR, Grand Am, and other forms of Motorsports. This is the first time that an American karting manufacturer has been invited to participate in the event at the circuit, owned by former IndyCar Series driver Felipe Giaffone and his family.
The Taylor brothers will join Negri and Gidley on the Trackmagic team, giving the team an all Grand Am lineup of GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 Daytona Prototype drivers. Two-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner Wayne Taylor will also be on hand, as well as National Kart News editor as the teams test and reserve driver.
The race is televised live in Brazil and is hosted by Formula One driver Rubens Barichello and IndyCar Series champion Tony Kanaan. Drivers who compete annually include Felipe
Massa – making his return from near-fatal injuries suffered in the Hungarian Grand Prix, Juan Pablo Montoya, Rafa Matos and Dan Wheldon. Multi-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher is also rumored to be competing.
The Trackmagic team will travel to Brazil on Nov. 31 with sponsorship in part from Shock Doctor and Gatorz Eyewear. The race begins at 1 p.m. on Dec. 5, when 70 teams will compete for 500 miles, 644 laps on the Granja Viana circuit.
“This is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, events in karting, a true endurance test, and a great opportunity to show the strength of some of our products and drivers, including the new Memo Gidley Signature Line or parts, due to launch January 2010,” Mike Pickman, President of Trackmagic said. “I also think the Trackmagic team will represent the United States quite well in the 500; we’ll be real proud to waive the Stars and Stripes on the podium! We are excited to have Oswaldo driving with us, and as the official importer of Kart Mini into the U.S., it shows how competitors can work together to further karting in the United States."
